Bowling with cabbages in Lincolnshire

To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Boston Borough councillor Mark Baker has come up with the quirky idea of Bowling Greens.  Cabbages will replace the bowls (they share their curved path design because of the cabbages’ cut side) and the jack will be replaced with a sprout.  The vegetables were chosen because they are typically grown in Lincolnshire.

The contest will be held in Central Park, Boston, as part of the jubilee picnic from 10:30 to 16:30 and the winner will receive a ‘world champion’ title, along with a trophy and a prize. If bowling greens becomes a success it may become a regular event.

Renewing boring old sports by replacing things with vegtables? Count me in! It's a very silly idea (and something only someone with a council position would come up with) but I'm convinced it'll be a big hit with the drunken crowds.

I do wonder what they'll do with the vegtables afterwards though. They appear to take so much pride in them; perhaps the winner's cabbages are turned into a feast? On a second thought though, that does sound a little bit morbid, it would be like eating a winning race horse...
